Compatible Plants

One of the most important things an aerated wastewater treatment system (AWTS) can do is to help you create green and lush gardens.  The treated effluent is ideal for irrigating garden, lawns, shrubs and trees. The actual size of the area to be irrigated will depend on the ability of the area to contain and distribute the treated effluent.  In garden areas surface mulching is an excellent idea and the irrigation area should be kept free of weeds and undergrowth. The actual quantity of treated effluent available for irrigation each day is not great.  The average family uses enough water to distribute about half a bucket on every square metre of a 200 square metres irrigation area.  If your property is large enough to allow it, you may with council approval take the option of having a second irrigation area.   

Below is a comprehensive list of trees, shrubs and other plants that may be suitable for planting in your irrigation area.  You should choose from this list in conjunction with a suitabliy qualified nursery person who will be able to reccomend species whilst taking your local climate conditions into consideration, the type of soil and the space you have available for planting. Creating a pleasant garden is just one of the advantages of having an AWTS.
